The Maybush

The old Stowmarket History page for the Maybush survives only as a very light capture, but it is still enough to identify the subject: a former Maybush on Bury Street remembered through an older photograph. Other pub-history sources help fill in the outline.

The Suffolk Pubs Guide records the Maybush at 43 Bury Street as a Stowmarket beerhouse that opened around 1838, was first mentioned by name in 1871, and closed in 1922. That record also notes that the building no longer survives, making it the kind of vanished site that benefits from having even a short page in a local archive.

Small pub histories matter because they bring back ordinary streets that larger histories often flatten out. The Maybush was not one of the town's grand institutions, but it belonged to the everyday social geography of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Stowmarket.

The archived page's emphasis on a surviving photograph also points to the value of visual local-history work. Even where text is thin, a disappeared building can still be re-entered into the town story through an image, an address, and a short chronology.
